Right after Microsoft
marked a quarterly loss in 26 years, I got an opportunity to review a preview
version of Windows 8 tablet. Windows 8 is more of a tablet OS with touch
interface but at the same time, it is a desktop OS as well. The best part of
Windows 8 is its familiarity and ease of use, especially if you are a Windows
OS user. There is nothing like getting used to the OS. One noticeable
difference between Windows 8 and its predecessors is the absence of ‘Start’
button. The Start button is replaced by a Start Screen.
The era of mouse seems
to be over with the introduction of Windows 8, now you can use your fingers to
give inputs on the tablet. Touch interface is pretty cool and there’s no
confusion of missing taps or tapping the wrong ones.
Windows 8 tablet supports
literally every device you can have. Connect any device let it be your phone,
printer or camera, the OS detects it within seconds and you can start working on
it straightaway, no hustle. Device support is exactly where Windows 8 scores
than its counterparts like iOS and Android. We all know that iPad don’t have a
USB port and you can’t even connect your iPhone with a wire to the iPad, even
though both comes from the same manufacturer with same OS. Android tablets won’t
even detect any camera connections. For Data transfer in Android devices you
need a file-manager app, on the other hand Windows 8 is simply ‘Plug and Play’.
With Windows 8 you can even connect other tablets.
Windows 8 has a tile-based
interface called Metro which is very smooth. Metro apps are quite good but the
question is that, will the major app developers come up with updated versions
for Windows 8? Multitasking has got a major facelift in Windows 8. You just
need to swipe in from left to bring in another app; the app which you have been
already working on will go into a suspended state for saving battery life.
After marking a loss in
26 years, I really feel that Windows 8 is the one that will make up for the
loss. It is much more device friendly than iOS and Android and the simple ease
of use will make it a strong competitor in the tablet market. Now let us see what
Apple and Google will come up with.
